Family Comics with Marek Bennett

Saturday January 23, 2010 - 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Kids and parents are invited to this special family workshop to create a comic book about your own family! Families will create engaging graphic narratives using pictures, text, and stories that only you can tell. During the afternoon, parents and children will interview each other and retell the stories they learn in comics form. Study the visual power of cartoons, the transitions and rhythms of comics, and the fun of designing and publishing your own comic book. Materials will be provided.

Wednesday Night Films at Your Library

Currently, the library is offering a Ernest Hemingway Film Series.  Each Wednesday, at 7 pm in the auditorium, there is a free film showing.  Even the popcorn is free @ your library!

Family Dance with Allison Aldrich and Hunt Smith

Friday January 1, 2010 - 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM in Heberton Hall

Family dances are held the first Friday of the month from November through May. Dances are great fun. There is always live music and an inviting relaxed atmosphere. The dances and light refreshments are free.

A Winter Wonderland Story Hour for Children at the Library - Come Enjoy and Explore the December Holidays

The Keene Public Library hosts a Winter Wonderland Hour! on Thursday, December 10, 2009 from 4-5 p.m. in the library's Youth Department.

The event commences at 4 p.m. with a tune played live on the clarinet by one of the library interns. Following the performance will be a story time for different December celebrations including Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Winter Solstice.  Molly Slavin, the hostess of the event, said, “They will learn about different December holidays.”

Documentary and Discussion on Children of Guatemala City Presented at Keene Public Library

On Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 7 p.m., the Keene Public offers a lecture, documentary, and discussion on the children of Guatemala City. The program will be presented by Safe Passage (Camino Seguro), a Maine based non-profit that works with the poorest at-risk children of families working in the Guatemala City garbage dump.

Come to the Keene Public Library’s Kay Fox Room on December 12, 2009 from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. to create a comic book about your family.

December 4th Family Dance to be hosted by Nils Fredland

The next Family Dance led by Nils Fredland takes place on Friday, December 4, 2009 at the Keene Public Library’s Heberton Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Perin Ellsworth-Heller playing filddle and Nathan Lyczak playing guitar and accordion will accompany Fredland.

For twenty years until now, Nils Fredland continues to bond people together by making music, leading dances, singing, and playing instruments. In addition, Fredland leads contra, square and community dances. People know Fredland for his friendliness and great stage presence.

Magician Debbie O'Carroll combines stage magic with a lot of audience interaction to create captivating programs for children. O’Carroll incorporates appealing props, enchanting costumes, captivating magic and lively stage movement to both educate and entertain her audience.

Anime and Manga Club Meets December 7 - Keene Public Library invites teens to attend “paper drama” stories

The Keene Public Library’s Anime and Manga Fan Club invites teens to a viewing of a newly acquired anime title called Kaze no Stigma. Participants will also attend a traditional kamishibai story presented and learn how to make origami. Acworth resident Yumiko Ito will offer the kamishibai presentation and origami instruction.

Seniors Play Wii at the Keene Public Library

On Thursday December 3, 2009, the Keene Public Library invites senior citizens to play video games with teens. Senior citizens will play virtual sports games at this event. Teen volunteers help at the event by teaching how to bowl, ski, or play tennis in the virtual world. A young video gamer at the library said that he hoped many seniors attended because, “It could teach them how to play.”

Comic book artist Marek Bennett reads from his new book NICARAGUA Comics Travel Journal at KPL on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at 7 pm. Traveling from school to school in Nicaragua last winter with the Henniker-San Ramón Comics Exchange, teacher and cartoonist Marek Bennett took out his pen and started sketching the people and places he encountered. NICARAGUA is 200+ pages of stories, interviews, conversations, and monologues (all drawn as comics) relate his experiences.

Teens, 'Tweens and the Internet

Do you have questions about teens, 'tweens, and the Internet? On Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at 7 pm, the library will host a guided discussion "Raising Teens and 'Tweens in a Digital World." Information to help you raise kids that use media safely and responsibly will be shared. Issues such as Internet Safety for Middle School and High School Kids, Social Networking, and Cyberbullying will be addressed.
