Exploring Pluto was contemplated since its discovery by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930, but Pluto presents significant challenges for exploration because of its small mass and great distance from Earth. All that has now changed. New Horizons was launched in January 2006. After a journey of 3 billion miles, it passed within 13,000 miles of Pluto in July 2015. Learn about Pluto and the New Horizons mission to Pluto from NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador John Sheff.
